Liposuction or liposculpture has become very popular over the last few decades as people have become aware of this remarkable body contouring and sculpting technique. Coinciding with the rise in popularity, liposuction has also been referred to using other terms such as liposculpture.
Liposculpture is purely a marketing term and not a medical term. If you hear the terms liposculpture, lipoplasty or liposuction, they all refer to liposuction surgery.
However, when I consider liposuction or liposculpture, I do make a distinction. For me, liposculpture is liposuction of several areas of the torso to create full liposuction body contouring.
Within the torso area there are six zones that uniformly collect fat; these are both sides of the waist, the upper and lower abdomen, the bra roll area or love handles, and below the shoulder area near the armpits. When I liposuction four to six of these different areas I consider the procedure as total torso contouring or liposculpture.
Liposuction or Liposculpture – Smart Lipo, Vaser Or Traditional Liposuction?
Over the last few years there has been an increase in surgeons using power assisted tools for liposuction or liposculpture procedures. These are quick and easy for the surgeons to apply, hence their popularity.
However, I do not use Smart Lipo or Vaser because they are harsh on the body and can cause my patients unnecessary pain and burns with unacceptable scarring. The results do not really justify the use. I exclusively use small cannulas because the results are vastly superior and my patients find the procedure gentler and easy to recover from.
By using the small delicate cannulas, I am able to remove fat from precise locations with exceptional accuracy. Other power assisted techniques cannot facilitate this degree of precision and the results reflect this with liposuction or liposculpture.
The Benefits of Liposuction or Liposculpture
For women weighing 250 pounds or more considering liposculpture it’s really important to try and avoid Smart Lipo or Vaser because the tools are very limited in the amount of fat they can remove.
I would advise anyone wanting to remove six to ten pounds (approximately three to five liters of fat) to avoid Vaser and Smart Lipo because these devices are not designed to remove higher volumes of fat in one procedure.
Vaser and Smart Lipo work by heating the fat to boiling point to destroy fat cells. If these devices are used too aggressively they can burn the patient. This threat is avoided with small cannulas and tumescent liposuction.
Surgeons that use Smart Lipo state the process encourages skin tightening. However, I have seen more enhanced skin tightening using the tumescent liposuction approach and small cannula technique. While it requires more skill and time from the surgeon, the results are vastly superior.
Another benefit is that only local anesthesia is required. Thus, my patients are comfortable and still able to communicate with me. My patients are able to move during the procedure and talk to me during the procedure making it easy to reach more difficult areas and create the ultimate body contouring.
Hopefully this has helped to clarify the meaning of liposuction or liposculpture and how liposuction can create a beautiful and curvaceous torso.
